A practical OEM/ODM buyer's guide to custom rigid gift boxes: materials, MOQ, finishing, pricing drivers and how to brief your packaging manufacturer.
Premium brands across cosmetics, jewellery, electronics and corporate gifting choose custom rigid gift boxes because the structure itself signals quality before the lid is even opened. If you are sourcing packaging as an importer or brand owner, this guide explains exactly what to specify when you brief a manufacturer for OEM or ODM rigid box production.
A rigid box is built from high-density greyboard (typically 800–1500 gsm) wrapped in printed or specialty paper. Unlike a folding carton that ships flat, a rigid box is delivered pre-formed and keeps its shape permanently. That rigidity is what creates the satisfying, silent close buyers associate with luxury.
With OEM you supply the dieline, artwork and material spec; the factory executes. With ODM the manufacturer also engineers the structure and suggests materials, inserts and finishing from experience. Many importers start with ODM to shorten the development cycle, then move to OEM once the structure is locked. See our packaging design & engineering capability for how we support both.
Foil stamping (gold/silver/holographic), blind embossing/debossing, soft-touch lamination, spot UV and ribbon pulls are the details that separate a commodity box from a branded one. Our magnetic-closure rigid gift box and drawer rigid box show two common structures.
Typical rigid-box MOQ is 300–1,000 units. Price is driven by board grade, wrap paper, magnet cost, insert complexity and finishing count — not by a simple per-unit rate. Tooling (the custom die) is usually a one-time cost owned by you under OEM, or amortised under ODM.
Send product dimensions, target weight, desired closing feel, print colours (Pantone or CMYK), finishing list and estimated annual volume. A good partner returns a structural dieline and a quotation within 24 hours. Request a free quote and we will send a dieline and sample plan.
Rigid boxes are the highest-leverage packaging investment for premium positioning. Specifying materials, finishing and MOQ clearly — and choosing the right OEM/ODM model — keeps cost predictable and quality consistent across reorders.
