FSC Certified Packaging: What It Means and How to Source It

What FSC certification means for packaging, the difference between FSC 100 / Mixed / Recycled, and how importers should verify and source FSC-certified boxes, bags and cartons.

If you sell into the EU, UK or eco-conscious retail channels, FSC-certified packaging is often a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have. This short guide explains what the label means and how to source FSC packaging without greenwashing.

What Does FSC Certification Actually Mean?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifies that wood fibre comes from forests managed to environmental, social and economic standards. For packaging, it applies to paper, carton board, kraft and rigid-box wrap paper. Certification is granted through a chain-of-custody (CoC) audit that tracks fibre from forest to finished carton.

What Are the Three FSC Labels?

Not all FSC claims are equal. Pick the label that matches your fibre mix:

Label Meaning Typical use
FSC 100% All fibre from FSC-certified forests Premium eco positioning
FSC Mixed FSC-certified + recycled / controlled wood Most common, cost-balanced
FSC Recycled 100% post-consumer recycled fibre Recycled-content claims

Why Does FSC Matter for Export?

EU retailers and many tenders require FSC chain-of-custody proof. Without a valid certificate, your shipment or listing can be rejected, and it also supports corporate ESG reporting. Our kraft bags and cartons can be produced on FSC board with on-pack labelling.

How Do You Verify a Supplier’s FSC Claim?

A logo alone is not proof. Work through this checklist before you order:

  • Ask for the factory’s FSC CoC certificate number (not just a logo claim).
  • Confirm the certificate is current and covers the product type.
  • Agree the exact FSC label you may print and the approved on-pack wording.
  • Keep the certificate on file for customs and buyer audits.

Does FSC Packaging Cost More?

Expect a modest premium over non-certified board, usually in the single-digit to low-double-digit percent range. For most export brands the easier retail access and lower compliance risk outweigh the small unit-cost increase. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I print the FSC logo without a certificate?

No. You must hold or buy from a CoC-certified supplier and use the exact label and wording they authorise. Printing it without approval is greenwashing.

Is FSC the same as recycled?

No. FSC covers responsible forestry; “FSC Recycled” is the variant for post-consumer fibre. Recycled content alone is not FSC unless certified.

How long is an FSC certificate valid?

CoC certificates are typically valid for five years with annual surveillance audits; always check the expiry date on the document you receive.
